Telling my students about the article

Today I sat my students down to tell them about the article that is coming out in the Washington Post Magazine on March 3.  They have known it was coming, but did not know the date.  I did not want them to get all excited about “My teacher’s going to be in a magazine!” and then have them find out that the topic is so difficult.  When I used that word, one student asked if that’s because it had so many hard words in it.  I replied, “No, it is difficult to read because it is so sad.”  I explained that my book shares all of the healing and joy I found on the other side of the shooting, but the article focuses on the tragedy itself.  And on the life we children led before my father left.

If my father treated us children that way today, he would be arrested on the spot.
