    Lynnie,
I ,too, was a teacher I used to know. Now, I am a retired teacher. Here’s something I learned during that last year of teaching. When I knew I couldn’t be fired for rebelling, because I was retiring anyway, I decided to teach like I used to teach. I spent a whole year NOT TESTING! No benchmarks, no data dis-aggregation, no fill in the dot tests. We completed projects I hadn’t dared touch in years, went outside at every opportunity and wrote for each other. I didn’t care what my test results might be, but I had a sneaking suspicion that they would be okay. They were. In a year of brand new tests, when state averages plummeted, my students beat the average. They made AYP and we didn’t do a daggone thing to prepare for those tests except learn and love learning.
It was a great way to go out. I only wish I had been brave enough to do it sooner. Be BRAVE! If you are teaching your kids they will be okay. Don’t let your administration bully you into making bad choices for your students.

Oh, Virginia! It’s wonderful to hear from you. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I have three more years and I really do want to be the best teacher I can be during that time! Bless you, and happy retirement!
